Noise colours are the plainest focus tool there is: no melody, no artist, no algorithm — just a steady wall of sound that makes a chaotic room behave. The differences between white, pink and brown are real, audible, and worth two minutes to understand.
The three colours, in plain language
- White noise spreads equal energy across every frequency. To the ear that skews bright and hissy — an untuned TV, a harsh shower. It masks superbly, but many people find it fatiguing at any volume worth using.
- Pink noise tilts the energy downward: each octave carries equal power, which matches how hearing works. It sounds like steady rainfall or wind — still bright, noticeably softer than white.
- Brown noise (also called red) tilts down harder still. The result is deep and rumbling — a waterfall heard through a wall, a jet cabin, surf from inside the house. Most people find it the easiest to live with for hours, which is exactly why it has become the internet's favourite.
